Indians might favour buttermilk or a cooling iced curd Lassi to wash down a spicy supper, but in Britain we're more accustomed to a Kingfisher or Cobra beer.

Last year, Cobra--a pseudo-Asian brand invented 15 years ago and now brewed by Charles Wells in Bedford--is reported to have achieved more than half its 50m [pounds sterling]-plus sales through restaurants.

Kingfisher, brewed by Kent's Shepherd Neame under contract to United Breweries of India, has 45% of the Indian home market and is a powerhouse brand in UK restaurants too.
