I'm ramping up for a truly frenzied couple of weeks of shopping for holiday gifts. That's because I failed utterly to get any gifts purchased early this year.

But I'm not sweating. Picking out great gifts is a cinch. You just have to tap into your inner child. The first step is overriding grown-up impulses of practicality and thrift. Those are bad criteria for gifts. Kids know pajamas are a terrible gift, and they are right.

The ultimate measure for any holiday gift is luxury. Buy as much luxury as you can afford. If you buy cashmere, buy the best cashmere. If you can't afford a top-quality cashmere sweater, buy a finely crafted cashmere scarf ...
