In the 1965 movie "A Charlie Brown Christmas," Lucy demanded that Charlie Brown go out and "get the biggest aluminum tree you can find ... maybe painted pink." Instead, Charlie returned with a spindly live fir tree that taught everyone "the true meaning of Christmas."
After that, aluminum Christmas trees began their spitfire descent into holiday kitsch purgatory, abandoned on curbs for garbage pickup or vanishing into attics.
But it should surprise no one that aluminum trees with names like "Evergleam" and once advertised as "permanent" Christmas decor have proven as hardy as cockroaches. Like other ...
