A Eugene church has joined denominational allies across the country in decrying the NBC and CBS broadcast networks' refusal to air a 30-second television spot that recruits new churchgoers.

The ad, commissioned by the United Church of Christ, has sparked debate over myriad issues such as gay rights, freedom of speech, presidential politics, corporate media ownership and whether one church is insinuating that it's better than other churches.

"It's a distasteful escalation in the culture wars," said Jim Upshaw, broadcast professor at the University of Oregon.
