Maker notes "richer" sound versus that produced by FM-synthesis sets

SAN JOSE, CA - To generate sound, board- and system-level developers typically choose ICs employing frequency-modulation (FM) synthesis. But Sierra Semiconductor has taken a different approach for its first round of audio products, borrowing from a professional audio technique called sampled synthesis. Sierra's Aria audio product line debuted last month with three chip sets that generate rich-sounding notes for low prices. Depending on features, the chip sets cost between $30 and $60 (10,000).

Aria chips can simultaneously "play" up to 30 instruments and sounds from 128 stored samples. ...
