Some people in recorded history have had enormous influence on later generations without ever having written a word themselves. Jesus of Nazareth, the focus of the Christian faith, is one of these; another is the teacher and philosopher Socrates. Everything we know about these figures comes to us from the words of other people. For the life of Socrates, we have four main sources: his student Plato; Plato's student Aristotle; the historian Xenophon; and Aristophanes, a comic playwright.
