The Athenian Acropolis is one of the world's best known ancient sites. While archaeologists have found evidence both of human life dating to Neolithic times and of monuments dating to several historical periods, the Sacred Rock is the most admired area. The reason: the magnificent buildings built in the fifth century B.C., the time of Socrates. Originally, these structures were decorated with exceptionally fine architectural sculptures.
