Dec. 8--With just three weeks left to the end of the year, the investment banks are beginning to fidget over where they will appear in the annual league tables for the various sectors of business they do -- mergers and acquisitions, initial public offerings, debt issuance and so forth.
The tables are always fairly absurd -- the fees firms earn are what ought to matter rather than the size of the deal done, and this is doubly the case because firms trailing in the tables are known to take on business at a loss in order to improve their relative position. Such nonsense ...
