Dec. 10--America West Airlines said Thursday it will not bid for bankrupt low-cost flier ATA Airlines, a decision that makes the hometown carrier's biggest rival, Southwest Airlines, and AirTran Airways the favorites to land 14 gates at Chicago's Midway International Airport.
CEO Doug Parker said Tempe-based America West would not submit a bid to U.S. Bankruptcy Court because the purchase of the nation's 10th largest airline would have been too costly.
