In northern forests and along mountain ravines the world over, spruces stand sentinal through the changing seasons, their graceful, conical forms contributing to the visual identity of those wild places. If you are blessed with acreage, by all means indulge in a few of these big trees and enjoy their definitive character: It is in the spruce's nature to grow tall and wide. Blue and golden selections can be the most domineering of all. For average-size and smaller gardens, compact and dwarf selections blend in best.
