YOU CAN GO a long way in this augmented European Union of ours: from the Aran Isles to the Pripet marshes, from Lapland to Sicily. Some of these places, although seldom inhospitable (there are B&Bs everywhere nowadays), are true border territories: great places to go if you want to escape the 21st century, perhaps disappointing if belatedly you find you didn't.
