The Philippines is the world's largest exporter of coconut products, and the industry has recently been boosted by last year's outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome, the virus which infected 12 people and killed two in the Philippines.

The reason is research into the AIDS virus by Conrado Dayrit, head of the country's top scientific research institute who, in 1999, found that the purest form of coconut oil could disrupt viruses' protective coating, making them vulnerable to attack by the body's immune system.
