Dec. 10--Six people, including outgoing state Rep. Timoteo Garza, D-Eagle Pass, were charged Thursday in a federal indictment accusing them of stealing more than $900,000 from the Kickapoo Indian tribe.
According to the 19-count indictment, tribal funds were systematically funneled from the Kickapoos' Lucky Eagle Casino near Eagle Pass to underwrite Garza's successful 2002 primary campaign against Tracy King.
Tens of thousands of dollars in tribal funds also were used for campaign contributions to an unnamed district judge, a Maverick County justice of the peace and an Eagle Pass City Council member, according to the indictment.
