WASHINGTON _ Former New York Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik abruptly withdrew his nomination Friday night to head the federal Homeland Security Department, citing personal reasons.
"Under the present circumstances ... I cannot permit matters personal to me to distract from the focus and progress of the Department of Homeland Security and its crucial endeavors," Kerik said in a letter to President Bush.
Kerik's withdrawal came one week after Bush named him to replace former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge as head of the agency in charge of preventing another terrorist attack. Kerik, the son of a prostitute who overcame ...
