Dec. 11--The sugar-coated high of Krispy Kreme is beginning to wear off, and headaches are on the horizon.

Krispy Kreme had been a proven winner since 1937, luring customers from around the globe to a small Southern community for its hot, glazed doughnuts. Based in Winston-Salem, N.C., Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc. was a regional chain in the Carolinas and surrounding states for most of its 67 years.

Word of mouth about its heavenly, sugary-sweet doughnuts quickly created a cult favorite that sold itself. The sheer popularity of its doughnuts forced the company public in April 2000.
