WASHINGTON _ As criticism of U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan by conservative American critics hit fever pitch this past week, a former British ambassador to the world body summed up the view from overseas.
"The United States has many traditions, some good and some bad," David Hannay told the Financial Times. "The worst of the bad is the lynch mob. The best of the good is due process. We need more due process and less lynch mob."
Last week, President George W. Bush's administration veered, at least for the moment, in the direction of due process.
