WASHINGTON _ Former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik was asked about his employment of a nanny during hours of questioning prior to his nomination to head the Department of Homeland Security, White House officials said Saturday.
But Kerik failed to reveal that he had not paid required taxes on her salary and that she was probably in the country illegally, the officials said. Kerik said Saturday that he only realized the magnitude of the problem Wednesday as he was preparing for his Senate confirmation hearing.
