BELLAU, France _ At a time when France and the United States are hardly speaking and french fries have been redubbed freedom fries in some American restaurants, it's reassuring to travel an hour north of Paris to Bois de la Brigade de Marine.

The area, whose name means "forest of the brigade of the Marines," was renamed by a grateful France for American aid in ending the last German offensive of World War I. The end of that war, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, is recalled each Nov. 11 as Veterans Day.
