Over the past few decades, Puerto Rico has emerged as a global leader in pharmaceutical manufacturing. The island is home to 80 pharmaceutical plants that employ nearly 30,000 people. 19 of the world's top selling prescription drugs are manufactured there, as well as numerous over-the-counter medications. In the first half of 2004, global sales of the 54 pharmaceutical products manufactured in Puerto Rico reached the $37.9 billion mark, an increase of 20.7% over the same period last year.
