Researchers at Toyohashi University of Technology have developed a metal impurities detector for foods using a yttrium/barium/copper oxide superconductor sensor. The detector can find minute metal pieces and needles mixed into meat and bread during production. It uses a very strong magnet so if there are any metal objects they become magnetic, and then the superconductor sensor detects the metal. Advance Food Tech plans a commercial release of the device this year.
