Microsoft said the other day that it's investigating reports of a security problem with its Windows Internet Name Service but seemed to acknowledge the existence of the vulnerability.
The security issue, said to affect NT Server 4.0, NT Server 4.0 Terminal Server Edition, Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003, could let an attacker take remote control of a WINS server.
Security experts say the vulnerability is caused by an error in WINS when handling replication packets.
XP, Windows 2000 Professional and Windows Millennium Edition are supposedly not affected by the fault.
