CDR Roundup - With sales of ethnic hair care products essentially flat or declining and retail competition in many markets intensifying, chain drug retailers face increasing challenges in this segment.
Overall sales of ethnic hair care products fell by about 5% last year, according to Nielsen Marketing Research. Hardest hit were supermarkets, where sales were off almost 8% and have fallen more than 21 % over the past five years. Chain drug outlets, which account for about 65% of sales in this category, fared better: their volume was basically flat, or down 1% to 3% in 1991.
