Towns like Loris, S.C., recognize importance of downtown retailers.

Dec. 16--When some retailers in downtown Loris receive a new shipment of items that might appeal to David Stoudenmire's taste, they send word to him at City Hall or phone him.

The Loris Mayor has shopped the small, locally owned stores in the downtown all his life and knows most business owners by first name, so it's not surprising he's built such a relationship with them.

"People know who you are," Stoudenmire said. "They know my taste. ... There's not a mall going to do that for me."
