It is often claimed that a play like Henry V (1599) can only be understood within Shakespeare's War of the Roses cycle. For this reason, Shakespeare's history plays are perhaps the most problematic works in the oeuvre when it comes to stage production. It may be that the tragedies and comedies are immediately "open" to interpretation: a concept can be freely developed, regardless of setting or style.
