Dec. 16--A decision on Wednesday by the Federal Communications Commission will most likely result in fewer choices for local phone providers and higher bills for residential consumers, critics said.
The FCC said regional Bell companies, such as SBC in Ohio, no longer needed to allow its rivals, like AT&T and MCI and smaller companies such as Akron-based First Communications, to use its facilities to provide local phone service. Phone companies have said without that permission, they're unable to compete for traditional local phone services.
