Dec. 17--MISSION, Texas -- Randy Emmitt's stroll through the World Birding Center in Mission turned interesting when he glimpsed a butterfly species not seen in the United States in more than a 100 years.
"It's absolutely gorgeous," said Emmitt, a North Carolina photographer, about the thick-tipped greta at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park. "You can see through it. It becomes transparent when it flies in the shade." The greta, which was last spotted in Brownsville in the early 1900s, was one of six new butterfly species found in 52 days in Hidalgo County, said Mike Quinn, an invertebrate biologist with Texas Parks and ...
