WHEN in Venice, five minutes can seem like a fortnight. Or at least, like days in which minutes become bell-notes, bellnotes become rooftops, rooftops become crumbling walls, walls become water, all bound in a circle which never stops turning.
Short winter days pass quickly but seem to lengthen - drawn out while the light fades and the clocks pause.
But there's alchemy on the Friday evening plane from Stansted, too. Everyone leaves the ground British, and lands Italian. They speak Italian, they look Italian, they have Italian luggage.
What about me? Have I been transformed into Count Francesco da Mosto, who recently presented the BBC ...
