NEW YORK -- Hair care is a huge category, one that prompts consumers to make multiple shopping trips. And while almost all American households buy hair care products, demographic differences play a big role in shaping the business.

According to ACNielsen's "Homescan Consumer Facts 2003 Report," shampoos, conditioners, coloring items, sprays and other hair care products achieved an 89.9% household penetration in the United States last year. The average household spent almost $38 during the year on those items, making about seven purchases over the 12 months.
