Nearly all old European plants figure somewhere in the folklore of the Nativity.

The most noteworthy plant tales involve the Holy Family fleeing to Egypt after Herod's edict to kill all infant boys. On that journey, Mary may have dried newly washed swaddling clothes on the branches of a plant. She may have rested beneath its shade. Its fruit could have fed her traveling family.
