Caution is key in estate planning, experts say.

Who among us wouldn't welcome more of each in our lives?

But when it comes to the legal, financial, tax and emotional issues that we face as we plan to pass our estates to inheritors, smiles, sympathy and simplicity aren't enough.

Instead, good estate planning usually requires a descent into the daunting and expensive realm of lawyers, accountants and financial advisers. It can also mean consulting self-help books or computer software and wading through lengthy insurance policies and legal documents such as wills, trusts and powers of attorney.
