Dec. 22--Author J.K. Rowling has given millions of readers extra Christmas cheer and a New Year's present, completing the sixth book in her wildly popular Harry Potter series for sale on July 16.

The on-sale date for "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" was announced yesterday, just two weeks after Rowling said on her Web site, "I have nothing noteworthy to report."

Indeed, Rowling added at the time, she was spending most of her time "sitting in front of my computer writing, re-writing and taking the occasional break to bang my head off the desk in frustration."
