Dec. 22--Paperwork--not pollution--will keep Barrie Park closed this winter, officials said this week, despite a recent notice to residents that the south Oak Park site would be reopened this month after a four-year, $100 million environmental cleanup.
"The park was supposed to be completed by now, but it's not going to happen this year," said Gary Balling, executive director of the Park District of Oak Park.
The problem, Balling said, is that the district cannot obtain an insurance policy until the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency issues a letter stating that no additional cleanup is needed.
