TOKYO, Dec 24 Asia Pulse - The research arm of public broadcaster Japan Broadcasting Corp. (NHK) has developed a next-generation, 24-speaker sound system compatible with its Super Hi-Vision technology, an ultrahigh-definition video system intended for extremely large screens.

NHK Science & Technical Research Laboratories developed its own sound system because it believed that conventional systems of positioning speakers in front, behind, and on both sides of the audience are inadequate for conveying a sense of realism when displaying video on very large screens.
