Dec. 26--JERUSALEM -- Mahmoud Abbas, who is expected to win the Palestinian presidential election next month, launched his campaign Saturday with a call for a total Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank and Gaza Strip and a pledge not to compromise on Jerusalem.
Addressing hundreds of cheering supporters in the West Bank city of Ramallah, Abbas reiterated bedrock demands made for years by Yasser Arafat, casting himself as faithful to the legacy of the late Palestinian leader.
