BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Labor leaders are considering a major drive to organize Wal-Mart workers. One proposal being considered by the AFL-CIO would devote $25 million a year to the all-out effort.
Unions see the fight as a critical priority, given Wal-Mart's size and its impact on the overall economy. Wal-Mart is just as vehement in its belief that the unionization of its workers would hurt its ability to serve customers effectively.
Wal-Mart's antipathy toward organized labor goes back to the early days of the company.
