Although older gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals make up a sizeable part of the elderly population of New York City, there is a dearth of research about their social lives, the character and organization of their social networks, and the extent to which their social care needs are being met. To illustrate, it is difficult to accurately estimate the number of gay men living in New York City because few population studies assess sexual orientation.
