Something was worrying me. My husband, Andrew, refused to worry along with me, pronouncing the prospect inconceivable. His detachment would have been admirable if I were able to share it. But the more sanguine his remarks, the harder I gnawed, chewing away any hope of mental peace.
Missing the luxury of childhood, when everything gets blurted to Morn or Dad, I refrained from mentioning my dread to my mother. Adults don't share their worries with anyone who's going to worry even more than they are.
