Research studies have consistently revealed that transformational leadership is positively related to work outcomes (Dumdum, Lowe, & Avolio, 2002; Fuller, Patterson, Hester, & Stringer, 1996; Lowe, Kroeck, & Sivasubramaniam, 1996). However, the question of what are the underlying processes and mechanisms by which transformational leaders exert their influence on followers and ultimately on performance has not fully been explored (Kark & Shamir, 2002; Kark, Shamir, & Chen, 2003).
