The subject of fuel contamination has many facets, and different contaminants have different effects. Dirty fuel itself, although undesirable, is not necessarily a major problem because the dirt should be removed by your fuel system's primary filter. The danger is that larger lumps of dirt will block the tank exit, and there's not much a filter can do about that. The engine will eventually refuse to start, and you could end up needing a tow.
