CHARLOTTE, N.C. - His valiant little quarterback was lying on the other side of the field with his left leg broken, so Boston College coach Tom O'Brien decided to do two things he doesn't normally do with 10:43 left in yesterday's Continental Tire Bowl.
First, he called his team together on the sideline and told the players they had to step up and win this game without Paul Peterson. Then the man Peterson called "the most conservative coach in college football" called a fake field goal on the very next play.
Both moves worked. Ryan Ohliger, suffering through a disastrous kicking day, ran for a 21-yard touchdown on the fake, ...
