Margaret Thatcher was said to get by on four hours sleep a night. Most of us aim for eight hours. But solo yachtsmen and women taking part in races survive on snatches of sleep, taken when the opportunity arises.

So howmuch sleep to we really need? No one knows, but evidence is emerging that napping can be a good substitute for proper sleep if it's done the right way.

New research, which is starting to attract interest from the airline industry, suggests that timing and length of naps is crucial.
