At a memorial service for Robert Peter Marshall in Sequim on Saturday, an honor guard from Neah Bay will render a heartfelt - and well-deserved - salute.

Marshall, 84, was a decorated World War II veteran who fought in practically every significant campaign in North Africa and Europe. He wasn't a Native American, but was the driving force behind the creation of Neah Bay's successful Native American VFW Post 11481.

Marshall died last week at his home in Port Angeles.

"We wouldn't be here without him," said Arnie Hunter, commander of the Native American VFW post and the traditional chief of Neah Bay.
