There may have been a roasted turkey on your table this Thanksgiving, but you probably would have been surprised to see a live turkey outside your window. In certain parts of Lake County, that could happen.
Wild turkeys are native to most of the eastern United States, including Illinois and the wooded hills of Lake County. Wild turkeys would have loved pre-settlement Lake County. They feed on acorns and other nuts and berries, as well as some insects and even salamanders. All of these would have been abundant in the wetlands and woods of Lake County.
