Last spring I went out to Wisconsin's curiously-named Embarrass River Valley to look at a system which heralds an extraordinary advance in educational methods. Without question it will have an enormous impact on schools in the future, particularly in rural areas. Referred to as the Interactive Distance Learning Project and operating over the fiber optic lines of the local telephone company, the Wisconsin system links seven schools within a hundred square miles. In a sense, classroom walls come tumbling down since the fiber optic lines establish audio/visual communication between far-flung classrooms.
