Massive tidal waves triggered by a powerful earthquake measured at magnitude 8.9 slammed into coastlines in Asia, killing thousands of people in five countries yesterday.
Reports gathered by Associated Press and Agence France Presse gave the following initial breakdown of casualties:
In Sri Lanka, at least 2,134, mostly children and the elderly, were confirmed dead.
In Indonesia, center of the earthquake, 721 people were confirmed dead, with the toll expected to rise further.
In southern India, about 1,100 people were reported killed, as boats, homes, and vehicles were swept out to sea.
