Evergreen trees provide much-needed color in the winter landscape. Tall pines, spruce or firs are great choices where there's plenty of room, but what should you plant near the house or in a small garden? Pint-sized conifers such as dwarf Serbian spruce may fill the bill.
Serbian spruce grows 50 or more feet tall, but the slow-growing dwarf Serbian spruce tops out at about 8 to 10 feet. It forms a dense conical or mound-shaped evergreen shrub, with compact branches that are clothed with short, densely set, blue-green needles that sport distinctive white stripes on the underside.
