Originally developed for long-distance transportation, intermodal is evolving as an alternative to traditional over-the-road drayage.
The viability of the short line intermodal concept is evident in the transportation program of Swiss Colony, the Wisconsin-based mail order specialty cheese company. Swiss Colony, with the help of McCloskey Transportation Services (MTS) of Exton, Pa., and the Wisconsin Calumet Railroad (WICT) of Janesville, Wis., has successfully replaced an inefficient 130-mile over-the-road dray with a dedicated short line intermodal program.
