Saudi Arabian Amiantit Co (SAAC) has won a contract worth $7.4 million from the Royal Commission for Jubail for the supply of 6.2 km of glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) pipes to transport seawater.
The GRP pipes, which have a 4 m diameter, are made using an automated process known as Flowtite, for which Amiantit owns worldwide patents. Amiantit claims to be the only company worldwide that commercially produces such a large diameter GRP pipe.
The composite pipes are said to be economical in terms of installation and life cycle costs because there is no need for periodic corrosion surveys or cathodic protection, as is required for steel pipes handling ...
