PHOENIX - Notre Dame's football players had talked about playing the Insight Bowl as a tribute to their fired coach, Tyrone Willingham.
Alas, they probably demonstrated why some of the powers that be at Notre Dame felt compelled to relieve Willingham of his duties after only three years, with time left on his contract, a move unprecedented in the school's rich football history.
"It's hard to tell how it affected us preparation-wise," Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn said. "I'd be lying if I told you it didn't affect some people. You try your best. Our team dealt with the situation that we were given."
