Jan. 7--A leading African-American publisher has sounded a sour note over the pending sale of Essence Communications Partners, parent of black women's magazine Essence, to Time Warner.

Earl Graves Sr., chairman of Black Enterprise magazine, issued a statement saying it was unfortunate "there wasn't an open bidding process."

Black entrepreneurs "could have made an offer for the company and possibly preserve Essence as a black-owned business and institution," he added.
